Job Details

The Secretary of State for the Department for Education (DfE) and Devolved Administration Ministers invite applications for a new Non-Executive Director (NED) to the Student Loans Company (SLC) Board.

Established in 1989, the SLC is an Executive Non-Departmental Public Body which undertakes a number of functions related to the provision of student and learner financial support on behalf of DfE and the Devolved Administrations.  It manages a nationally significant Income Contingent Repayment loan book with a value of £86.7 billion, processes around 1.8 million student finance applications each year, and pays out over £7 billion in maintenance loans and grants to students and over £8 billion to higher and further education providers.

The successful candidate will demonstrate senior experience at board level (or equivalent) in dealing with stakeholders in public and/or private sector organisations and the ability to think strategically and challenge constructively.

Applications are particularly welcomed from candidates with significant expertise and experience in the Higher or Further Education sectors, ideally at Vice Chancellor or equivalent level.   It would also be desirable for candidates to have experience of financial planning and scrutiny at a very senior level.

The successful applicant will be expected to attend Board meetings (10 per year), and may be required to participate or chair Board sub-committees and attend ad-hoc meetings as necessary.   Board meetings are generally held in Glasgow and also on occasion in London and Darlington.

The post attracts remuneration of £12,000 per annum, rising to a maximum of £17,000 depending on participation in board sub-committees or other additional duties as agreed with the SLC Chair.

Closing date: Sunday 5 February 2017.
