Job Details

Postdoctoral position (full time) at the Pharmacenter of the University of Basel (main host), and the University spin--off Polyneuron Pharmaceuticals AG, Basel (collaboration partner) is available starting in April 2017 (standard Swiss postdoc salary). The contract for the position will be for one year with a planned extension.

Project:

The laboratory of Prof. Beat Ernst has a successful track record in the development of glycomimetics for therapeutic applications. Together with Polyneuron Pharmaceuticals AG, we are offering a postdoctoral position within our highly interdisciplinary team. The postdoc will contribute to a project aimed at the development of a new antigen--specific immunotherapy approach for dysimmune neuropathies. This novel approach is based on a glycoconjugate platform enabling the rational design of antigen--specific autoantibody scavengers. Our main focus involves immune--mediated diseases associated with anti--glycan antibodies such as anti--MAG neuropathy, multifocal motor neuropathy, and Guillain--Barré syndrome.

Responsibilities:

Our laboratories are state--of--the--art equipped for chemical synthesis, analysis, molecular modelling, and the biological evaluation of complex carbohydrates and glycoconjugates. The applicant will work in the following areas:

  • Chemical synthesis of carbohydrates and mimetics
  • Multi--step chemical synthesis of complex oligosaccharides
  • Synthesis and characterization of glycopolymers

Requirements:

Applicants should have a Ph.D. in carbohydrate chemistry. A strong background in complex oligosaccharide synthesis and analytical methods (MS, NMR, HPLC) is essential for the success of the project. Additional experience in glycoconjugate synthesis and/or peptide synthesis is desirable. Furthermore, a strong interest in drug R&D; and good knowledge of the English language is required. The successful applicant should possess excellent communication skills in order to collaborate efficiently with the academic research group and members of the spin--off.
