Dynamic university research Institute needs an organised, energetic Operations Manager who takes initiative, has an eye for detail as well as the big picture, and enjoys working with people.
The Society Work and Development Institute (SWOP) conducts relevant and exciting research on political and social issues in Southern Africa. The Institute collaborates with academics, grassroots organisations and government across South Africa and in many parts of the world, and is a collegial, team-working organisation committed to developing a new generation of researchers and intellectuals. The Operations Manager is a pivotal position for:
* designing and managing financial, project and administrative systems
* providing efficient administrative support to large-scale research projects
* maintaining a productive, collegial and supportive environment for managers, staff and students.
 

Key responsibilities
The Operations Manager will:
• Manage the financial, HR and general administration of the Institute, design and oversee operational systems, and supervise the administrative staff
• Draw up and manage budgets and contracts in accordance with the University’s financial and legal policies
• Liaise with partners, funders, university management, board members, associates and fieldworkers
• Project manage large research projects and conferences
• Manage and support interns and postgraduate students
• Drive the media and marketing strategy of the Institute, including website & publications
• Support and facilitate the work of the Director, including fundraising and report-writing
 

Requirements:

• Tertiary qualification, preferably in Social Sciences or Finance
• Three to five years’ administrative and financial experience, two of which need to have been at a relatively senior position or supporting a middle/senior manager;
• Computer literacy in Microsoft Office Suite( high level);
• Demonstrated interpersonal skills;
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills (ability to communicate using professional terminology);
• Demonstrated ability to work unsupervised, and to display initiative;
• Ability to work under pressure.
