Scientific Director

Division of Intramural Research

National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke

The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) seeks a Scientific Director with creative vision and strong leadership skills to guide its intramural neuroscience programs (https://neuroscience.nih.gov/ninds/Home.aspx).  The successful candidate will oversee a diverse group of approximately 50 independent principal investigators (PIs) conducting research in basic, translational and clinical neuroscience and help chart the future for a vibrant neuroscience research community across the NIH (https://neuroscience.nih.gov/Home.aspx).  Currently the Scientific Director allocates a $165M annual research budget, in consultation with the NINDS Director and the NINDS Clinical Director, to intramural NINDS laboratories and clinical programs. The Directors are advised by the NINDS Board of Scientific Counselors, a panel comprised of prominent extramural researchers.  The Scientific Director recruits new faculty and steers a vibrant training program that includes post-baccalaureate, pre-doctoral and post-doctoral researchers.

Physical resources are outstanding, including the recently completed Porter Neuroscience Research Center, which joins together neuroscience PIs from many NIH Institutes and the NIH Clinical Center, the world’s largest research hospital.  The Scientific Director of NINDS is expected to play a key role in helping to integrate and coordinate the different neuroscience programs across the Porter Neuroscience Center and in shaping the future direction of intramural NIH’s world-class neuroscience research.

The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. and/or M.D. and an established record of outstanding research accomplishments, scientific leadership and service within the basic and/or clinical neuroscience community.  Salary is commensurate with experience and accomplishments. The Scientific Director will supervise his/her own research laboratory, supported by resources appropriate for the size and scope of his/her program.

Applicants must submit a current curriculum vitae, a complete bibliography and two statements:  his/her vision for intramural neuroscience at NINDS and a statement that addresses the specific qualification requirements (please limit both statements to two pages each).  Applications should be sent to Susan Amara, Ph.D., Chair, Search Committee, c/o Joanne Pomponio jpomponio@ninds.nih.gov. Review of applications will begin on March 27, 2017 and applications will continue to be accepted and considered until the position is filled.

The NIH encourages the application and nomination of qualified women, minorities and individuals with disabilities.  DHHS, NIH and NINDS are Equal Opportunity Employers.
