DEPARTMENT OF INFORMATION SCIENCE

LECTURER (TWO POSTS)

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Department of Information Science has one lectureship available in the Information Science sub-discipline, and one in the Publishing Studies sub-discipline.

The incumbents will be responsible for:

  • Teaching and curriculum development:
    • Information Science: Information Ethics, Competitive Intelligence, and Information Behaviour at undergraduate and postgraduate levels;
    • Publishing Studies: Contemporary Publishing Studies and Publishing History at undergraduate and postgraduate levels;
  • Research:
    • Information Science: Participation in group and individual research projects in Information Ethics, Competitive Intelligence, and Information Behaviour;
    • Publishing Studies: Participation in group and individual research projects;
  • Administration, both sub-disciplines:
    • General administration at departmental level.

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Information Science sub-discipline:
    • A Master’s degree in Information Science (MIS) or a Master’s degree in Information Technology (M.IT);
    • At least five years of teaching experience at tertiary level in Information Ethics, Competitive Intelligence and Information Behaviour;
    • Proven local or international conference participation.
  • Publishing Studies sub-discipline:
    • A Master’s degree in Publishing Studies, or a closely related field;
    • At least five years of teaching experience at tertiary level in contemporary Publishing Studies and Publishing History;
    • Proven local or international conference participation.

 

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

  • Information Science sub-discipline:
    • Knowledge of advanced theories in Information Ethics, Competitive Intelligence, and Information Behaviour;
  • Publishing Studies sub-discipline:
    • Knowledge of advanced theories of Publishing Studies and of relevant research methodologies; 
  • Both sub-disciplines:
    • Knowledge and experience of blended teaching methodologies and a learning management system;
    • Knowledge of research methodologies;
    • Good communication skills and a high level of language proficiency;
    • Knowledge of and practical skills in IT systems used in the specified sub-discipline’s environments;
    • A high level of computer and information literacy competence;
    • Teamwork.

 

ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:

  • Both sub-disciplines:
    • Good progress with a doctorate.

 

The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent’s level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED medical aid scheme and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
