The Department of History at the University of Southampton invites applications to a Lectureship in Modern European History (East-Central European History, 1800-1989) available from 18 September 2017 on a fixed-term basis, for three years. The post is to cover for Professor Mark Cornwall who has secured a Leverhulme Trust Major Research Fellowship.

The successful candidate will be required to teach Professor Cornwall’s Special Subject (‘The Crisis of the Habsburg Empire’) in the academic year 2017-18 and ideally will be able to teach one or more of Professor. Cornwall’s option modules (‘The Struggle of the Czechs: From Serfdom to Stalinism’, ‘The Birth and Death of Yugoslavia’, or ‘In Hitler’s Shadow: Eastern Europe 1918-1939’).  There will be scope to develop new modules in modern East-Central European history over the course of the lectureship that will enhance the Department’s existing strengths in Modern European History (for further details, see our website at http://www.southampton.ac.uk/history/).  

You must have a PhD or equivalent qualifications and experience in Modern History, and must show a developing profile of international excellence in research and publications, together with potential for attracting research funding. You will undertake research-led teaching at all levels of the Faculty’s History programmes, will have the opportunity to contribute to the design and teaching of new modules in History, and you will play an active role in our administrative team.
