Job Details

Keywords: Benthos, molecular tools, metabarcoding, biodiversity
The construction of biological inventories has primarily and somehow successfully relied upon morphological identifications of taxonomic groups, although benthic community study is a time consuming task that requires meticulous taxonomic expertise. Thus, there is a need for complementary methods that can rapidly and cost effectively appraise ecosystem biodiversity and temporal variations following natural or impacted trajectories. Thus, the aim of this post-doctoral project is to test how taxonomic data correlates between morphological studies and molecularly ones, to obtain more robust data of benthic community biodiversity.
In the post-doc project, environmental DNA (eDNA) will be explored in the sediment to characterize the composition of communities from macroorganisms to microorganisms. It will be compared to numerous ecological data available in this area thanks to different project and observatories: Seasonal macrobenthic and Megabenthic biodiversity, Food web structure, sediment profiler analysis, spatial maps of dredging intensity in the Bay of Brest derived from Marine Traffic data during the fishing season. The molecular analysis (eDNA) along the spatial survey gradient will allow to estimate in another way the biodiversity of micro- and macro-organisms within the sediment. Metabarcoding, metagenomics and metatranscriptomics analysis will be performed to estimate in the best way, the seasonal variations of relative abundance and diversity of microorganisms and macrorganisms in the sampled sediment. Correlation of eDNA reads with macrobenthic and megabenthic biodiversity abundance and biomass will be tested.

Full description of the project and team : ENV#3
We are looking for highly motivated postdoctoral researchers for building together an innovative project to apply for a Marie Sklodowska-Curie European Fellowships to the next call (September 2017). If funded by the European Program, the project will start in May 2018.
Detailed information about the welcoming and application procedures : UBO-DEI

MSCA-EF are prestigious fellowships funded by the European Commission. They offer a rare opportunity to talented scientists: the chance to set up research programmes of their own. They provide an attractive grant for 1 to 2 years including salaries and allowances for mobility, family and research.

Applicants must be «Experienced Researchers» (i.e. by the time of the MSCA deadline, be in possession of a doctoral degree or have at least four years of full-time equivalent research experience).

Applicants can be of any nationality but must not have spent more than 12 months in France in the 3 years immediately prior to MSCA deadline.

To apply, please e-mail your expression of interest to delphine.muths@u-bretagneloire.fr (object of the email: MSCA application), joining the following documents (in pdf format):

- a CV (including a list of publications and the exact date of your stay in each position and/or country)

- a research outline document (up to 2 pages) describing the possible research activities you want to pursue at UBO and identifying the research synergies with the UBO faculty members / pre-identified topics.

Following the reception of your application, the eligibility of your profile for a MSCA-EF application will be checked and the identified supervisor will be contacted.
