PhD Studentship –Understanding the role of early-life inflammation on the incidence of Alzheimer’s disease
PhD Supervisor: Dr. Diego Gomez-Nicola co supervisor: Dr. Mariana Vargas-Caballero
Application Deadline: 5th March 2017
Interviews will be held in Southampton General Hospital
PhD Description:
Studentship available at Diego Gomez-Nicola’s group (www.dgnlab.co.uk) to investigate the impact of early-life systemic inflammation on the onset and progression of Alzheimer’s disease. Microglial cells are the resident immune cells of the brain and play crucial roles in the regulation of normal and pathological neural functions. This PhD project will investigate how risk factors associated with the onset of Alzheimer’s disease modulate the physiology of microglia, helping to better understand the roles of these cells in the brain, through a multidisciplinary approach using in vivo models, genetic molecular tools and analysis of brain function.
The University of Southampton provides an outstanding environment for research on neuroscience. The research group is part of the Alzheimer’s Research UK South Coast Network and the Southampton Neuroscience Group (SoNG), and is integrated across the disciplines of biology and medicine including laboratories with clinical and non-clinical expertise.
The project is funded for 3 years and welcomes applicants from the UK and EU who have or expect to obtain at least an upper second class degree (2:1) in Biological Sciences or allied subjects. Funding will cover fees and a stipend at current research council rates of £ 14,533 per annum for 2017/18 entrants.
Due to funding restrictions this position is only open to UK/EU applicants.
