Job Purpose

The University of Birmingham is pleased to announce a substantial investment in the School of English, Drama and American & Canadian Studies. Investment in this high-achieving School is supporting growth in the Department of Drama and Theatre Arts, currently placed first nationally in the Guardian University Guide and the Complete University Guide.

We wish to appoint a Lecturer in Drama and Theatre Arts with effect from 1st September 2017, or as soon as possible thereafter. We seek established and early career academics with completed and examined PhDs, and a developing record of research and teaching that will strengthen and complement our current offer as well as introduce additional specialisms, such as particular historical foci, performance and politics and/or philosophy, theatre and performance practices, world theatres and theatre in applied and community contexts.

The successful candidates will be expected to create and disseminate knowledge through initiating and conducting original research, provide strong REF outputs, and contribute to developing and delivering undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. An ability to research through and/or to teach practice will be an advantage. In addition the post holders will contribute to the Department and School by undertaking academic administration as appropriate.

Person Specification

  • • A PhD in a related field
  • • Research/teaching experience and scholarship within subject specialism
  • • Proven ability to devise, advise on and manage learning/ research
  • • Skills in managing, motivating and mentoring others successfully at all levels


Research

  • • Experience and achievement reflected in a growing reputation
  • • Experience and demonstrated success in planning, undertaking and project managing research to deliver high quality results
  • • Experience of applying and/or developing and devising successful models, techniques and methods
  • • Understanding of and ability to engage in knowledge transfer, enterprise and similar activity


Teaching

  • • Ability to design, deliver, assess and revise teaching programmes
  • • Extensive experience and demonstrated success in developing appropriate approaches to learning and teaching, and advising colleagues
  • • Experience and success in enhancing the student experience or employability


Management Administration

  • • Ability to contribute to School/Departmental management processes
  • • Ability to assess and organise resources effectively
  • • Understanding of and ability to contribute to broader management/administration processes
