JOB PURPOSE:

To undertake research in line with the School’s research strategy, to teach at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level, and to
contribute to School administration/outreach activity. This post will play a role in the future development of the Mathematical Sciences
Research Centre, providing a crucial input in shaping the capability in Data Science in collaboration with academics within the
University and beyond.

MAJOR DUTIES:

Teaching:
1. Develop teaching methods, design course units and deliver teaching and assessment activities including lectures, tutorials and
coursework as assigned by Head of School.
2. Develop approaches to teaching and learning, which are appropriate for the subject area; reflect developing practice.
3. Contribute to the enhancement of quality teaching within the subject, school or faculty.
4. Develop learning and teaching tasks and methods.
5. Contribute to the design of innovative teaching programmes.

Research:
1. Develop the research activities of the School in the area of Data Science by sustaining a personal research plan through
managing and undertaking research activities in accordance with a specific research strategy in the Research Centre.
2. Sustain a high quality publication record by publishing in refereed journals and presenting at conferences to assist individual
research and so that the School’s research profile is enhanced.
3. Develop research proposals and funding bids, in collaboration with others if appropriate.
4. Direct, coach and develop research staff, where appropriate.
5. Ensure that research projects are completed on time and within budget.

Administration/Contribution to the Community:
1. Contribute to the School’s outreach strategy by developing external links.
2. Develop links with relevant industries and/or external bodies to encourage technology transfer opportunities and create
opportunities for future research projects.
3. Provide pastoral care for students within own area to ensure, as far as practicable, that all relevant issues are dealt with in a
timely, sympathetic and effective manner.
4. Carry out designated School functions, including, for example, participation in committee work, assisting in the process of
admissions, preparation of submission for teaching quality assessment or the REF.

Planning and Organising:
1. Plan for and set teaching and research objectives over a number of years.
2. Plan and manage own teaching and tutorials as agreed with Head of School.
3. As module leader, co-ordinate with others (such as support staff or academic colleagues) to ensure student needs and expectations are met.
4. Design/update modules in line with School’s teaching strategy.
5. Plan for the use of teaching and research resources as appropriate.
6. Prepare research proposals for submission for external funding.

Resource Management Responsibilities:
1. If appropriate, supervise the work of others, for example in research teams and projects.
2. Manage own teaching, research and administrative demands under general supervision of Head.
3. Assist in the development of skills and competence in others (for example through the supervision of research students).
4. If appropriate, manage use of resources for research and teaching.
5. Participate in judgements regarding the use of resources within their research project/school.
6. Act as mentor for students in capacity of personal tutor.

Internal and External Relationships:
1. Communicate complex and conceptual ideas to students as well as to peers using high level skills and a range of media.
2. Member of the School Board and Examination Board and such committees relevant to their administrative duties.
3. Collaborate with other academics within School.
4. Participate in and develop networks, for example to identify sources of funding, contribute to student recruitment, act as website
editor, secure student placements, market the institution, facilitate outreach work, generate income, or build relationships for future activities.
5. Contribute to the School’s outreach programme by establishing links with local community groups, industries etc.

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:

1. Hold a PhD in an area of Data Science.
2. A strong record of publications in an area of Data Science in peer reviewed/refereed journals or invited presentations that are
REF returnable in accordance with stage of career.
3. Commitment to applying for and obtaining peer reviewed research income from research councils and other relevant funding bodies.
4. Evidence of potential for developing and maintaining an independent research programme.
5. Experience using Data Analytics packages such as R, or Python.
6. Evidence of ability to teach Data Analytics at all levels through the medium of English.
7. Willingness to supervise research students and postdoctoral researchers.
8. Commitment to strengthening the School’s national and international research and to developing collaborative networks.
9. A clear vision on future research and development plans and how they would benefit the School.
10. Evidence of scholarly activity, e.g. conference presentations, book or papers reviews.
11. High level of analytical capability.
12. Ability to communicate complex information effectively.
13. Ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing.
14. Demonstrable intellectual ability and good time management
15. Willingness to travel to conferences and other relevant scientific events.

DESIRABLE CRITERIA:

1. Completed PGCHET or an equivalent teaching qualification.
2. A record of successful grant applications.
3. Successful supervision of PhD or Masters students.
4. Evidence of successful research collaboration, participation in collaborative networks or research teams.
5. Experience of teaching Data Analytics in Tertiary level education.
6. Evidence of good teaching evaluations.
7. Contribution to a wider range of administrative tasks.
8. Contribution to a wider range of community/outreach activities.
9. Plenary or invited talks at international conferences.
