JOB PURPOSE:

To undertake research and provide research leadership in line with the School’s research strategy, to teach at undergraduate and
postgraduate level, and to contribute to the School’s administration/outreach activity.

MAJOR DUTIES:

Teaching:
1. Provide high quality teaching in the area of Law and Innovation (broadly defined) within the School.
2. Develop and teach courses or learning programmes for undergraduate and postgraduate students within the Law degree
courses, having overall responsibility for their design and quality.
3. Provision of teaching within foundations of legal knowledge subjects as required. There is a slight preference for common law.
4. Plan and review own teaching load and approach to teaching and coach others in doing the same.
5. Set and mark coursework, supervise and advise undergraduate and postgraduate research.
6. Act as internal examiner for undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Research:
1. Plan, establish and lead a research group of international excellence in the area of Law and Innovation (broadly conceived)
which enhances the profile of the School.
2. Sustain an extensive track record of published research by publishing in refereed journals, with leading publishers, and
presenting at national/international conferences.
3. Pursue funding bids (particularly Research Council UK) which develop and sustain research support for Law and his/her
particular specialisation in general and advance the reputation of the School and the University.
4. Develop strategies to attract both national and international research students.
5. Provide supervision of part-time and full-time research students.
6. Direct, mentor and develop research staff.
7. Ensure that research projects are completed on time and within budget.

Administration/Contribution to the Community:
1. May take responsibility for the development and management of staff.
2. Contribute to the running and strategic direction of the University through designated committee representation or project activities.
3. Contribute significantly to the development and running of the School by taking on appropriate School co-ordinating roles. Such
duties may include, for example, Director of Research, Director of Education, Module/Programme Co-ordinator or other recognised official University roles.

Planning and Organising:
1. Plan and deliver research, teaching and outreach programmes and ensure that resources are available. Will involve substantial
forward planning over a number of years.
2. Be involved in the strategic planning over a number of years for the School and contribute to the University’s strategic planning process.

Resource Management Responsibilities:
1. Provide academic leadership by co-ordinating the work of others to ensure that courses are delivered effectively or organising
the work of a team by agreeing objectives and work plans.
2. Develop and manage staff and resources, in support of major research, teaching or outreach activities.
3. Act as a personal mentor to peers and colleagues and personal tutor to students.

Internal and External Relationships:
1. Lead and develop links with internal and external networks, e.g. chairing and participating in Institutional committees, build up
contacts with external examiners/assessors, educational bodies, employers, professional bodies.

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:

1. At least a 2nd class degree in Law, a JD or another qualification which includes subjects that equate to the Foundations of Legal
Knowledge; and a PhD in Law or relevant subject.
2. Recognised international excellence and reputation.
Sustained publication record of international excellence in Law.Sustained record of securing external research funding.
3. Substantial experience of teaching and assessment in Law at University level.
4. Evidence of ability to teach and assess courses in Law at undergraduate and postgraduate level, to include (i) courses relating
to law and innovation (broadly conceived); and (ii) at least one module within the foundations of legal knowledge subjects, with a
slight preference for common law.
5. Successful, sustained postgraduate student supervision as primary supervisor normally at PhD level.
6. Substantial experience of providing academic leadership at a strategic level in Higher Education.
7. Contribution to a wider range of administrative tasks at a more strategic level.
8. Willingness and ability to contribute to the management of the School in general and the appropriate research cluster in particular.
9. Proven ability to plan and deliver a programme of research and proven skills in coaching and developing others in best practice techniques.
10. Ability to communicate complex information effectively.
11. Involvement in productive external collaboration.
12. Ability to provide effective leadership.
13. Understanding of resource management processes and skills to apply them effectively.
14. Evidence of leadership qualities.

DESIRABLE CRITERIA:

1. Evidence of HEA membership.
2. Experience of contributing to the teaching of common law modules
