SENIOR VETERINARY TECHNOLOGIST (CONTRACT APPOINTMENT FOR ONE YEAR)

PEROMNES POST LEVEL 10

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The successful candidate will be responsible for rendering a diagnostic support service to research staff and postgraduate students in the bacteriology laboratory of the Department of Veterinary Tropical Diseases. This will include:

  • Operating equipment used in qualitative and quantitative analysis such as balances, centrifuges, microscopes, etc;
  • The revision and writing of SOP’s according to set methods/criteria;
  • Providing clinical diagnostic services to OVAH, other departments and private clients;
  • Monthly environmental monitoring, weekly balance, autoclave and id reagent verifications;
  • Communicating with poultry vets and vet students regarding results, test procedures and information transfers;
  • Participating in proficiency and inter-laboratory testing; 
  • Performing aerobic and anaerobic isolation and identification test methods;
  • Performing poultry fungal isolation and identification test methods;
  • Performing and interpreting antimicrobial susceptibility tests;
  • Typing of results of bacteriology tests;
  • Performing the sample registration process for the bacteriology laboratory and ensuring that samples are received and registered in accordance with the prescribed procedure;
  • Ensuring that media and reagents are prepared accurately and positive/negative controls are applied (where appropriate);
  • Performing weekend duties on a rotational basis in the bacteriology laboratory.

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • National Diploma in Veterinary Technology;
  • Registered with the South African Veterinary Council as a Veterinary Technologist;
  • Three years’ experience in a bacteriology laboratory.

 

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

  • Basic level of computer literacy in MS Office as well as database and laboratory information software;
  • Appropriate language and communication skills;
  • Good interpersonal skills and the ability to interact effectively with a wide range of entities within the University community as well as external entities.

 

ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:

  • BTech in Veterinary Technology;
  • SANAS: Professional Short Course in Laboratory Systems (ISO 17025) and Internal Auditing (For All Standards) (5 days). 

 

The all-inclusive remuneration package for this contract position will be commensurate with the incumbent’s level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines.
