MRC/Wits Developmental Pathways for Health Research Unit

PART-TIME MEDICAL DOCTOR REQUIRED FOR RESEARCH STUDY IN HEALTH SCIENCES AT WITS 2017

Applications are invited for a part-time (50%) medical doctor to assist with a research project within the MRC/Wits Developmental Pathways for Health Research Unit (DPHRU), in collaboration with the South African Medical Research Council for a project: “Determinants of type 2 diabetes mellitus risk in middle-aged black South African men and women: dissecting the role of sex hormones, inflammation and glucocorticoids”.

The research project will address the rising burden of type 2 diabetes in black middle-aged South Africans. The project will examine the changes in sex hormone levels over the menopausal transition in women, and in men of the same age, and explore the effects of body fat distribution and insulin sensitivity and secretion, dissecting the specific roles of glucocorticoids and inflammatory mediators in the context of HIV. The study population will comprise a middle-aged cohort from the urban township of Soweto in Johannesburg, SA.

The successful candidate will be based at the DPHRU offices at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital in Soweto, Johannesburg, on a 50% contract, and will assist with clinical research techniques including fat biopsies and intravenous glucose tolerance testing. The candidate will be encouraged to enrol for a PhD degree, using the data collected as part of this study.  

Candidates must meet the following requirements:

  • MBChB or equivalent
  • Registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA)
  • Interest in research

 

The successful candidate will form part of a collaborative research team, including researchers from the WITS/MRC Developmental Pathways for Health Research Unit, South African Medical Research Council, Umeå University, Sweden and Oxford University, UK. 

For this part-time position (50% of time), the candidate will be remunerated an amount of R480,000 per annum.
