Job Details

  • Prestigious international university
  • Wide range of employee benefits
  • Postdoctoral Research Fellowship opportunity in aquatic epidemiology

  • The University of Adelaide is one of Australia's leading Group of Eight, research-intensive universities and is consistently ranked among the top 1% of universities in the world. Established in 1874, it is Australia's third oldest university with a strong reputation for preparing educated leaders and delivering research outcomes that contribute to local, national and global wellbeing.

University of Adelaide employees enjoy a range of benefits and favourable work conditions that include opportunities for career development and advancement.

The Faculty of Sciences is one of five faculties at the University of Adelaide. As the first university in Australia to grant degrees in science (1882), science has long been at the cornerstone of the institution and this continues today. As a research and education leader in fields such as biomedical sciences, agricultural, environmental and earth sciences, and photonics, the faculty offers an exciting and innovative work environment.

The School of Animal and Veterinary Sciences is one of four schools in the Faculty of Sciences, located at the University's Roseworthy campus approximately 50 km north of Adelaide on a 1600 hectare property, less than eight kilometres from the township of Gawler. The campus includes a working farm, animal holding facilities, yards, sheds and a range of general purpose and specialist teaching and research spaces and laboratories. It is South Australia's only veterinary school and constitutes a team of leading animal and veterinary science academics. The school has a Veterinary Health Centre with four units that offer a range of first opinion, ambulatory and specialist veterinary care across all animal species to the general public and referring veterinarians and are used in its veterinary program.

The export of Southern Rock Lobsters (Jasus Edwardsii) from southern Australia to markets in Asia is one of Australia's most valuable fisheries and currently accounts for approximately 4,000 tonnes with a gross revenue of approximately AUD200 million. The ability to maintain or hold lobsters for extended periods is imperative for the industry to capitalize on fluctuating market demand and gain maximum return for the fishery industry. A research collaboration between the University of Tasmania (IMAS) and The University of Adelaide has been funded by the industry in partnership with Fisheries Research and Development Corporation (commonwealth government) to improve post-harvest survival of live held lobster. The project will focus on characterizing factors affecting lobster survival in holding and will explore three broad areas of research including epidemiological, physiological and pathological investigations. A one-year full-time research fellowship in epidemiology is being offered to conduct the epidemiological investigation of the project.

The successful candidate will be expected to conduct the assigned research project in an organised, structured and independent fashion, contribute to proposal writing, and preparing manuscripts and reports. Participation in formal classroom teaching is not expected but possible for candidates with strong interest in teaching.

Salary: (Level A) $80,881 per annum

Superannuation: An employer contribution of 9.5% applies

Term of position: This fixed-term contract is available immediately for one year with the possibility for extension if grant funding becomes available

    Position requirements

    • A PhD degree (or equivalent training) in quantitative epidemiology
    • Demonstrated ability to conduct independent epidemiological research in addition to working effectively as a member of a research team
    • Demonstrated record of publications in leading scientific journals and conference proceedings
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
    • Excellent organisational and time management skills
    • Ability to undertake regular field trips to visit industry members
