Institute for Social Science Research

The Institute for Social Science Research (ISSR) is a national leader in advanced interdisciplinary social science and evidence based policy research. ISSR researchers address some of the most important issues and challenges facing Australia today in areas such as development effectiveness, education, employment, housing, social wellbeing, homelessness, policing and security, sustainability, and Indigenous disadvantage. The Institute conducts research on priority issues and offers commercial services and training for public and private sector organisations.

The research group in which this position sits contributes to the international evidence base of development assistance in reducing poverty and disadvantage. It seeks to further the science of development practice, with a focus on the leadership of frontline workers in complex social settings. Using qualitative and quantitative methods, scholars in this group work closely with policy makers and frontline development workers to ensure their research directly impacts upon policy and practice and contributes to systemic institutional change.  An emerging program of research involves borderlands research, with an initial focus on the PNG Australia Borderland.  The group is also heavily involved in teaching postgraduate students and professional short courses, including a new Masters of Leadership in Global Development, with a MicroMasters entry pathway (see https://www.edx.org/micromasters/uqx-leadership-global-development).
