JOB PURPOSE:

To provide epidemiological, statistical and geographical analytical skills for the Prostate Cancer UK (PROMS) Study and the N.
Ireland Cancer Registry. To assist in the development of an internationally recognised programme of cancer epidemiology projects.

MAJOR DUTIES:

1. Provide statistical and analytic support for the Life after Prostate Cancer Diagnosis (LAPCD) study including multi variate
analysis and weighting of data to compensate for responder bias.
2. Assist with the timely collation, validation and analysis of datasets containing detailed clinical data for all cancers diagnosed in
Northern Ireland for official statistics and clinical audit.
3. Support data manager in assessments of data quality in the NICR including review of existing data sources and assessment of new data sources.
4. Provide information for regular enquiries from a wide variety of interested parties (media, clinicians, parliament, health trusts, etc.) requiring new data analysis.
5. Undertake detailed epidemiological, statistical and geographical analysis of cancer incidence and mortality data, using
appropriate techniques and packages contributing to reports and peer reviewed publications. This may involve presentation of work at meetings.
6. To undertake survival analysis, risk assessment, cluster analyses, etc and provide feedback to clinicians/trusts/etc. in the form of written reports.
7. Maintain up to date knowledge and training in statistical techniques in cancer epidemiology as well as data protection and NICR data confidentiality
8. Provide advice and guidance to colleagues (both internal and external) on statistical analysis and research methodologies.
9. Engage with statistical colleagues to provide NICR Director with advice and guidance on issues relating to data quality, integrity
and production of NICR outputs.
10. Manage personal administrative tasks related to own work and contribute to applications for national and international grant funding.
11. Maintain a personal work plan and manage and undertake activities in accordance with specific project plans of the Registry.
This involves contribution to grant applications, articles for publication in peer-reviewed journals and, where possible,
presentation at academic conferences.

Planning and Organising:
1. Plan own day to day work activity within the framework laid down for the post.
2. Plan the use of own resources.
3. Support planning of proposals for submission to external funding organisations.
4. Plan to meet deadlines for reports, journal publications and conference presentations.

Resource Management Responsibilities:
1. Manage own duties under supervision of line manager and in accordance with the aims of the Cancer Registry.
2. Ensure resources are used in an effective and efficient manner.
3. Provide guidance as required to support staff.
4. Assist in the development of skills and competence in others.

Internal and External Relationships:
1. Liaise on a regular basis with colleagues and health service staff.
2. Build internal contacts and participate in internal networks for the exchange of information and to form relationships for future collaboration.
3. Join external networks to share information and ideas with a view to engagement in collaborative work.
4. Attend and contribute to relevant meetings.
5. Develop collaborative relationships with cancer epidemiology in Centre for Public Health and within the UK and International Cancer Registry community.

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:

1. Degree or equivalent in a health sciences related area e.g. maths, statistics, psychology, biology, epidemiology or other subject
relevant to research activity.
2. PhD in area such as Statistics / Maths / Epidemiology or a cognate subject.
3. Minimum of 3 years relevant experience to include working in a cancer epidemiology research environment.
4. Experience of using statistical packages SPSS / STATA / SAS.
5. Track record of peer-reviewed publications and ability to attract grants.
6. Ability to develop, manage and effectively execute original lines of work.
7. An ability to make sound, balanced and rational judgements in the overall best interests of the Cancer Registry.
8. High level of analytical capability.
9. Good IT skills.
10. A clear communicator, written and oral.
11. Able to present work and other plans and reports to the wider community and audiences including Health Services, major
charities, National Health Service Research & Development, European Union and other funding bodies.
12. A clear commitment to interdisciplinary working.
13. A team player who can develop effective internal and external projects and practice links.
14. Confidentiality clause.
15. Ability to meet the mobility needs of the post (which may include national and international travel) and to work outside normal hours when necessary.

DESIRABLE CRITERIA:

1. PhD in area such as Statistics/Maths/Epidemiology or a cognate subject.
2. Significant recent experience of cancer epidemiology resulting in a report/publication.
3. Experience or significant involvement in national and/or international data analysis.
4. Experience in the preparation of official statistics.
5. Track record of peer-reviewed publications and ability to attract grants.
6. Evidence of presentations at scientific meetings
