Centre for Applications in Natural Resource Mathematics -  School of Mathematics & Physics

The Centre for Applications in Natural Resource Mathematics (CARM) is a School Centre in the School of Mathematics and Physics at The University of Queensland. The Centre is co-funded by UQ and the Queensland Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (DAF). The Centre focuses on the development and application of mathematical and statistical theory and tools that will provide outcomes in the management of fisheries, water security, and conservation. It provides UQ students with quantitative skills critical for Australia's future sustainability. More information can be found at http://www.smp.uq.edu.au/CARM.

The University of Queensland is one of the top three universities in Australia, measured by the quality of its comprehensive range of research fields. In addition to providing excellent potential for interdisciplinary research, the University is located in the vibrant riverfront city of Brisbane, whose sub-tropical climate, cultural diversity, and proximity to coastal regions make it an attractive environment in which to live.

The role

The successful appointee will provide teaching and research support to CARM.  In the research domain, the person will develop quantitative theory, tools and models for management of natural resources.  This includes frequent publication in high-quality journals, participation in and organizing of conferences, international and interdisciplinary collaboration, and attracting competitive research funding. The appointee will also be expected to teach undergraduate and postgraduate courses in the Natural Resource Mathematics program and other programs, where required. Other teaching duties include postgraduate supervision and curriculum development.

The person

Applicants will possess a PhD or equivalent in Mathematical Sciences or a closely related discipline, with an established record of outstanding original research commensurate with career stage. Applicants should address how their research complements and supplements our current research strengths. In addition, successful appointees will have high-quality teaching and supervisory experience at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, with the ability to effectively develop, lecture and coordinate courses in Natural Resource Mathematics.

Candidates with research interests in the application of mathematical tools to sustainable fisheries management are encouraged to apply, especially in areas such as: single and multi species population modelling; spatial modelling; bio-economic and socio-economic modelling; management strategy evaluation; adaptive management; optimal monitoring tool development; and ecosystem-based fishery management.

The University of Queensland values diversity and inclusion.

Applications are particularly encouraged from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Applications are also encouraged from women. This role is a full-time position; however flexible working arrangements may be negotiated.

Remuneration

This is a full-time, fixed term appointment for two(2) years at Academic level B or C. The remuneration package will be in the range:

Academic Level B - $92,142 - $109,419 p.a., plus employer superannuation contributions of up to 17% (total package will be in the range $107,807 - $128,020 p.a.).

Academic Level C - $112,874 - $130,150 p.a., plus employer superannuation contributions of up to 17% (total package will be in the range $132,063 – $152,276 p.a.).
