School of Social Science

With over 45 academic staff and 900 equivalent full-time students including 100 higher degree students, the School is one of the most prestigious of its type in Australia. It is a research-intensive School comprising the disciplines of anthropology, archaeology, criminology and sociology. At the undergraduate level, the School manages the Bachelor of Social Science and the Bachelor of Criminology and Criminal Justice (Honours), and also offers majors in each discipline within the Bachelor of Arts, along with an archaeological science major in the Bachelor of Science. The School manages postgraduate coursework programs in Development Practice, Community Development, Museum Studies, and Heritage Management. 

The archaeology discipline trains students in anthropological archaeology with an emphasis on archaeological science, cultural heritage management, and historical archaeology and active research in Australasia, Pacific Islands, South and Southwest Asia, Portugal, the Mediterranean (Turkey, Cyprus, Egypt) and Africa. The School has world-class facilities with its archaeological laboratory, the Archaeology Teaching & Research Centre – an outdoor site for practical teaching and experimental archaeology, and the Anthropology Museum.

The role

The School of Social Science is seeking to appoint a Lecturer or Senior Lecturer in Archaeology, fixed-term until 30 June 2021 (expected start date 3 July 2017). The role involves teaching undergraduate and postgraduate courses in archaeology, supervising honours and postgraduate student theses, conducting research including bringing in external grant funding and publishing scholarly papers, and undertaking service and engagement activities in the School.

The person

Applicants must have a PhD in archaeology or equivalent PhD in anthropology. They must demonstrate knowledge in lithic technology with ongoing archaeology research lab and field projects, with technical expertise in at least one of: lithic analysis, ancient technology, human evolution/dispersals.  The successful candidate will have a demonstrated capacity for innovative teaching and course design, with experience in teaching courses in archaeology across a number of areas:  lithic analysis, ancient technology, archaeological science, introductory archaeology, Australasian archaeology, laboratory methods and field skills.  The successful applicant will have the ability to supervise honours and postgraduate student theses, demonstrate high quality contribution to research including a track record of publication in refereed journals, and success in applications for research grants.  High-level interpersonal and communication skills, the ability to work independently and collaboratively with colleagues, is essential.

Remuneration

This is a full-time, fixed-term appointment for 4 years (3 July 2017 to 30 June 2021) at Academic Level B or Level C (Teaching & Research). The base salary is: $92,142 to $109,419 for Level B or $112,874 to $130,150 for Level C, plus employer superannuation contributions of up to 17%.
