The Opportunity

Monash is Australia’s largest university – with 70,000 students from more than 170 countries – an education and research powerhouse committed to the great challenges of the age. In the fifty years since our founding we have built a reputation for world-leading research, quality teaching, and an inspiring innovation and learning culture. We are a member of Australia’s Group of Eight research-intensive universities and we consistently rank among the top 100 universities worldwide. Monash staff and students are characterised by their sense of purpose, their global outlook and for having the confidence and skills to make a positive change.

The Faculty of Engineering has contributed significantly to the University’s success; the University ranks among the top 50 in the world for engineering and technology (THE World University Rankings). One of the largest engineering faculties in Australia, recent growth has been impressive and it continues to capitalise on its breadth and depth of disciplines to tackle highly significant research problems. The Faculty’s facilities and equipment are outstanding and include a world-leading visualisation facility, and multi-million dollar microscopy and microanalysis equipment.

A prestigious opportunity now exists for a new Dean to head a comprehensive faculty with approximately 5,000 students and 200 staff. The position offers excellent scope for a leader to inspire and support an ambitious and highly motivated faculty as it strives to improve on its outstanding record. The Faculty of Engineering has fostered highly successful relationships with both industry and community partners and new opportunities to deepen that engagement further continue to emerge.

The new Dean, as well as being an exceptional leader, will have an impressive research track record and a keen appreciation of the key challenges and opportunities for engineering research and teaching in the coming years. They will have an outstanding reputation for discovery and collaboration and be enthusiastic about taking the Faculty to the next stage. The successful candidate will be forward-looking, astute, inspirational, and an excellent communicator who can demonstrate the capacity to attract significant external income and generate significant impact with a truly collaborative approach.
