How do we determine the number of nurses required on hospital wards?

We are looking a research fellow who is eager to use their skills to help deliver a project that aims to answer a pressing problem for today’s NHS:   how do we organise the workforce to make sure that the right staff are there when they are needed? Funded by the National Institute for Health Research, we want you to use your modelling skills to help us to address key uncertainties about effective and cost-effective nurse staffing, identified by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE).

Working as part of the Health Work research group, you will be responsible for collating and organising workforce data from 4 NHS Trusts; maintaining a database and developing models to explore the costs and consequences of different approaches to deploying nursing staff on wards in hospitals, depending on variations in patient acuity and dependency. The job will involve working closely with hospital Trusts to ensure the collection and delivery of the data for the project.

Situated within one of the UK’s leading research Universities, the Faculty of Health Sciences ranked as the leading department of its type in the 2014 Research Assessment Exercise. Workforce research within the faculty contributes significantly to its reputation for international excellence, in both the quality and impact of its research.

You will have a PhD (or be nearing completion) or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in health economics, econometrics health services research or operational research with strong modelling skills. Candidates from other disciplines will be considered if they can demonstrate that they have the required skills to deliver the project. Knowledge of health care delivery will be advantageous. You will need to be able to work independently and as part of the project team which includes colleagues from the University and NHS hospitals.

You will (with appropriate supervision / support) undertake both economic and mathematical modelling aspects of the work.  We will consider applications from candidates wishing to work part time and job share provided we can match the range of skills required. The post holder(s) will benefit from close support from a multi-disciplinary team including health economics, operational research, statistics and workforce experts, close links to the NIHR Collaboration for Leadership for Applied Health Research & Care (Wessex) and a growing community of health economists and operational researchers within the faculty and across the University. The senior research fellow appointment is available to candidates with substantial relevant prior experience

Informal enquiries prior to application are encouraged. Contact Professor Peter Griffiths (SNCT@soton.ac.uk) tel: +44(0)23 80597877).

Application procedure:

You should submit your completed online application form at www.jobs.soton.ac.uk. The application deadline will be midnight on the closing date stated above.
