Applications are invited from researchers to work as a research technician in the laboratories of the Geochemistry Group of Ocean and Earth Science at the University of Southampton. Our group comprises of more than 30 researchers and postgraduate students applying cutting edge geochemical analysis and modelling to scientific questions of major societal, economic and environmental importance. We have a world-class range of analytical equipment and associated clean laboratories and our instruments and techniques are applied to applications in a diverse range of fields from the geological to the medical.
This post will involve supporting our lead researchers by performing cutting edge isotope and geochemical analyses, training postgraduate and undergraduate students and visitors, and developing new analytical techniques and methodologies to ensure the Geochemistry Group remains at the forefront of geochemical research in the UK. The principal research areas will be in the fields of paleoclimate and oceanography but it is expected that the appointee will be involved in research across a broad range of disciplines.
The applicant should have skill level equivalent to achievement of HND, Degree, NVQ4 or basic professional qualification and experience in either chemistry, geochemistry or isotope geochemistry and should have some experience of sample preparation, clean lab methodologies, elemental purification using column chromatography, and ideally analysis using (multi-collector) inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Some experience with the following non-gaseous stable isotope systems would also be beneficial: Li, B, Mg and Fe.
