Job Purpose
Library Services is the largest division within Academic Services with over 250 staff working in 6 sites. Our activities can be categorised into three broad areas; Library Academic Engagement; Library Customer Support; and Collection Management and Development. In addition, Special Collections based in the Cadbury Research Library also falls within the broader Library Services organisational remit.
The post holder is responsible for the strategic development and operational management of the Library Services electronic and physical library collections and, for ensuring that the Information Resources Budget is used effectively to deliver the best value for money.
The post holder is responsible for managing and supporting use of the University institutional repository (UBIRA), and for managing University Open Access funds. The post holder oversees Library Services activities in relation to copyright, intellectual property rights, data protection, freedom of information, text and data mining and any associated relevant UK and European legislation.
The impact of the role is significant as it has responsibility for ensuring that the diverse information needs of staff, students and the wider community are supported through relevant and cost effective acquisition and access to content and that resources are made available through effective channels.
The post holder is a member of the Library Services Executive Group (LSEG), which includes the Director of Library Services, the Assistant Director: Library Customer Support, the Assistant Director: Library Academic Engagement and the Director of Special Collections.
Person Specification Qualifications:
Formal education to degree level or equivalent
Experience:
Significant experience of Higher Education and its strategic environment
Extensive experience of collection management and development
Significant experience of leading and motivating a medium to large team (12+ people)
Experience of performance management
Experience of change management
Knowledge , Skills and Abilities:
Ability to contribute effectively to development of Library Services and ability to translate strategic thinking into operational activity in order to provide high quality services to a diverse range of users
Excellent interpersonal, leadership and management skills, ability to work collaboratively and to delegate effectively
Excellent financial and budget management skills with a proven track record in strategic planning of human, financial, and information resources
Excellent communication and presentation skills in relation to communicating with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders with diverse professional and academic backgrounds
Excellent organisational skills and an ability to prioritise own workload in the face of significant conflicting demands
Excellent IT skills and awareness of how technology can be used to support learning, teaching and research and the ability to apply knowledge to service development
Knowledge and understanding of the changing culture of Higher Education including the importance of the quality agenda and performance measurement
Excellent knowledge of research needs, processes and the management of outputs and an informed understanding of rapidly changing scholarly communications
