Job Details

Are you an ambitious researcher looking for your next challenge?  Do you have a background in dynamical meteorology?  Do you want to further your career in one of the UK’s leading research intensive Universities?

Tropical cyclones (TCs) that make landfall are one of the most costly and deadly atmospheric phenomena due to their destructive winds, heavy precipitation and effects on the sea, such as storm surges. While TC track forecasting has improved greatly over the last decades, forecasting the intensity of TCs remains very much a challenge. The project will focus on understanding the inner core processes in TCs that are related to rapid intensification and evaluating the representation of these processes in the Met Office Unified Model (MetUM).

You will conduct a detailed analysis of inner core processes using observations and perform a systematic evaluation of processes related to rapid intensification in global and high-resolution ensemble weather forecasts. In collaboration with the UK Met Office you will play a significant role in building the UK’s capability to perform ‘convection-permitting’ ensemble forecasts in the tropics.

The position is part of the Newton Fund Weather and Climate Science for Services Partnership Programme (WCSSP South East Asia) project. You will work closely with project partners at the UK Met Office, in the Philippines and at partner universities in Germany and Australia. You will have the opportunity to attend project meetings in these locations.

You will have, or be close to obtaining, a PhD in a quantitative physical science, such as Physics, Applied Mathematics or Meteorology, and have experience in the use of large observational and/or numerical model datasets. You will be experienced in programming on a Unix/Linux operating system and have excellent communication skills.
