Job Details

The Auckland Bioengineering Institute (ABI) is a cross-faculty research centre. Our research deals with the application of mathematical and engineering sciences to biology and human physiology.

A prestigious Post-Doctoral Fellowship funded by the Aotearoa Foundation is available to support an outstanding emerging scientist to undertake research within the Auckland Bioengineering Institute (ABI) at the University of Auckland. The ABI’s central research themes are computational physiology, imaging and medical device development, tissue engineering, and regenerative medicine. The ABI supports basic scientists, engineers and clinicians who work together to undertake a spectrum of medical and biological research.

The ABI seeks to appoint a new Aotearoa Fellow. This fellowship is for four years and is supplemented with two four-year PhD scholarships that will help the Fellow to establish their research group. The Aotearoa Fellowship is designed to support the strategic goals of the ABI. For this fellowship this goal is identified below, i.e. the only applications that will be discussed by the selection committee are those that align with this goal.

We wish to strengthen early-to-mid career leadership in support of existing research activities in the ABI  (for a list of research areas see www.abi.auckland.ac.nz/en/about/our-research.html). The successful applicant will be someone who has worked with one of our research groups, either from within New Zealand or from overseas. The applicant must show evidence of strong and effective research leadership and contribution to the research community, as well as academic excellence via research publications.

Conditions

·         The Fellowship will be known as the Aotearoa Foundation Bioengineering Post-Doctoral Fellowship.

·         The Fellowship will be held for a period of four years and provides salary support and some expenses as determined by the Selection Committee.  Salary will be negotiated with the applicant but will be aligned to University academic scales relative to experience.

·         The Fellow will be a University of Auckland employee for the duration of the Fellowship and will be subject to the University’s general conditions of employment.

·         The Fellow is expected to supervise PhD students and to complete the PhD supervision courses that are required by the University to be eligible to act as a supervisor. The extent of engagement in other teaching will be determined in discussion with the Director of the ABI.

·         The Fellow will be required to submit an annual report to the Foundation through the Director of the ABI.

·         Publications and presentations arising during the tenure of the Fellowship must acknowledge the support of the Fellowship.

·         The Fellow is expected to be a good academic citizen by providing collegial engagement with other members of the ABI and some service contribution to the ABI as determined by the Director of the ABI.

Eligibility

·           Preference will be given to applicants who have completed a PhD or equivalent postgraduate research degree within 10 years of applying.

·           For this appointment, it is essential that applicants have identified a suitable senior academic in the ABI to support their application.

Selection committee

·           The Fellow will be appointed by the Director of the ABI based upon the recommendation of a selection committee appointed by the Director.

·           Membership of the proposed selection committee: The ABI Directors, the Associate Director of Research, at least one other ABI principal investigator, and one or more senior non-ABI academics from within the University.

Selection criteria

Selection will be based on the quality of the applicant’s career to date and the intended programme of research. The following criteria will be assessed:

·           Academic background and track record of the applicant and suitability to the proposed project

·           Scientific merit and feasibility of the proposal

·           Alignment with the strategic goals of the ABI

·           Quality and vision of the career plan

·           Support from referees and senior academic mentor (where applicable)

·           Evidence of potential research leadership

·           For both appointments the applicants will need to explain how the Fellowship will enhance their own career and the goals of the ABI.

Your application

Your application should detail:

 ·           The applicant’s academic (and other relevant) background

·           The programme of research to be undertaken (including the PhD projects), how the research will fit with the applicant’s future career plans, and how the research aligns with the strategic goals of the ABI

·           Details of how the applicant’s research aligns with an existing research group and senior academic mentorship within the ABI

·           A letter of support from a senior academic(s) within the ABI

·           Names and contact details of three referees
