The University of the Witwatersrand seeks to appoint a Director for the Centre for Learning and Teaching Development (CLTD).  The Centre is critical in enabling the continuous academic and professional development of academic staff, postgraduate students and ensuring  the transfer of knowledge to postdoctoral fellows of the University.   The post of Director for CLTD is an academic post, which requires that the incumbent is an academic leader with an established research record that enables her or him to meet the requirements for professorial appointment at the University. The incumbent will be responsible for developing academic development policy and procedure regime, ensuring the continuous improvement of service delivery in the Centre by devising appropriate strategies, identifying key projects and focus areas for academic staff development,  co-ordinating and facilitating the provision and sourcing of expertise to present professional development courses and programmes, identifying and maintaining professional networks for the purposes of ensuring that operations are aligned to national and international best practice norms and standards, and compiling a budget and managing financial, human and other resources for the Centre.

 

For appointment to the position, the candidate must:

  • be familiar with the Higher Education Act and how this interfaces with:  labour legislation in South Africa, initiatives by the Department of Higher Education and Training, and operations of statutory bodies such as SAQA , SETAs, CHE .
  • demonstrate a solid grasp of the national landscape in terms of both higher and further education, and understand the academic environment.
  • have a thorough background in the training of adult learners, and familiarity with a range of teaching, learning, and training methodologies.
  • demonstrate an understanding of the modern technologies and their use in people management, training and development, and teaching and learning environments.
  • have knowledge and a thorough understanding of performance improvement systems in a University setting.


The Director must have the energy, experience and creativity to inspire and facilitate academic and professional development across the University. The ideal candidate must have a PhD with 6 – 8 years of relevant experience. S/he must have the following skills: managerial and leadership, change management, conflict management and negotiation, training and presentation. S/he must have the  ability to work under pressure with limited resources and conflicting demands; high tolerance for ambiguity and uncertainty, commitment to transformation and high appreciation of diversity, the ability to take decisions within  incomplete information, and the ability to interpret trends and plan in visionary (two to three year) cycles.

Remuneration:  An attractive remuneration package is offered commensurate with the seniority of the position.
