Job Purpose

The Institute of Applied Health Research based within the College of Medical and Dental Sciences at the University of Birmingham are seeking to appoint a Professor of Ambulatory Care. This is a new post which will provide research leadership to build a programme of work supporting the NHS in its transition towards developing a sustainable acute care pathway to meet the needs of patients.

The urgent care pathway in the NHS is in a period of unprecedented demand in both primary and secondary care. This post offers an excellent opportunity for an individual to provide strategic leadership in an exciting and vibrant environment, focusing on the development of a portfolio of mixed methods research, in addition to building a pipeline of future researchers and clinicians who can deliver care across traditional service boundaries.

Person Specification

  • Undergraduate qualification in a relevant subject (clinical or non-clinical)
  • Postgraduate qualification in a relevant subject area
  • Member of relevant Professional bodies i.e. MRCGP or MRCP
  • Current clinical work in acute ambulatory care either within an acute hospital trust or community trust setting
  • GMC GP or specialist registered
  • Excellent national and international reputation in ambulatory care
  • Providing expert advice to colleagues, clinical researchers, clinicians and external bodies
  • Strong research reputation with publications in international peer reviewed journals
  • Academic profile nationally and internationally, with the potential for (or ongoing) research collaborations
  • Experience of research leadership within NIHR infrastructure Proven success in research leadership
  • Significant success in raising external research funding
  • Experience on journal editorial boards and grant awarding bodies
  • Familiarity with NIHR Academic Clinical Fellow development and mentorship
  • Experience of delivering academic teaching
  • Experience of supervision of doctoral and masters students through to timely completion
