Job Details
Job Purpose
To provide support for users of the site library by:
- •Answering basic enquiries relating to collections, services and equipment, using the library catalogue and other online systems; referring queries to colleagues (within the site library or in the Main Library) where necessary
- •Providing, as appropriate, a lending service: issuing, renewing and discharging loaned material; handling reservations and requests from the Main Library Research Reserve; handling queries relating to loans and charges on loaned material.
- •Cash handling in relation to charges on loaned material and stationery sales.
- •Undertaking shelving and stock maintenance activities: sorting and reshelving material, retrieving items from the shelves, searching for missing items and undertaking routine tasks relating to stock management (for example, basic amendments to item records, tagging and barcoding)
- •Checking areas of the library to ensure that information on display is up to date, furniture and equipment is in good order and reporting faults as appropriate.
- •Assisting customers in the use of equipment such as multifunctional reprographics units and scanners.
- •Recording library usage for example, entries, enquiries and loans; entering data onto spreadsheets etc.
- •Reporting on operational issues which occur at times when other staff are not present, to ensure that more senior colleagues can deal with matters requiring their attention.
- •Behaviour management (noise, eating, drinking, incident reporting, lost property).
- •Taking responsibility for the security of the Library, by following appropriate opening and closing routines
- To undertake other duties as required, commensurate with the grading of the post.
Person Specification
- •Education to at least GCSE level (at grade A-C) or equivalent.
- •Relevant recent experience of dealing with the public (especially face to face) in a frontline service environment.
- •Excellent interpersonal and verbal communication skills.
- •A friendly, customer oriented approach.
- •Demonstrable ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
- •Ability to work flexibly in a busy environment.
- •Numeracy and alphabetical skills.
- •Ability to ensure accuracy, even when performing routine tasks, and to demonstrate attention to detail.
- •Good level of IT literacy and a willingness to learn/adapt to new technologies.
- •A methodical and organised approach to work.
