Under the supervision of the Watch Engineer/ Shift Supervisor observes and operates 900 #, 135 # steam boilers and their auxiliaries and or site DI water production facilities. Must have a thorough knowledge of boilers, piping, and auxiliary systems and have a practical knowledge of the control instruments. The position will require the testing, treatment and adjustments to the heater and boilers for proper chemistry.

Works from verbal and written instructions, governed by special operating procedures received from the Watch Engineer. Otherwise works from standard operating procedures. Exchanges operating information from previous shift and relays it on to relieving shift. Works under the supervision of Watch Engineer who has the responsibility of spot-checking this position during each shift. Trains persons assigned to them for qualification or advancement to a higher classification. Must practice proper cGMP and documentation requirements.

Responsibilities include and are not limited to the following:

- Operates 900 #, and 135 # steam boilers in accordance with standard operating procedures. Observes automatic combustion controls, gauges, and fires. From interpretations of the combustion controls, gauges, and fires, adjusts auxiliaries to maintain an efficient fire while holding a steady steam pressure without emissions.

- Starts stops and operates all boiler auxiliaries (fans, pumps, etc.)

- Performs in-process control tests on boiler and heater water. Using the control tests of the water analysis determines the correct amounts of chemicals required by the boiler, heater and control the feed systems to the test results, and adjust the blow downs for proper boiler concentrations.

- Records data hourly on all equipment under his /her jurisdiction and reports any unusual conditions to the Watch Engineer.

- Monitors all alarms in the area, and reports all abnormalities to the Watch Engineer.

- Assists the Watch Engineer in the operation of the power plant.

- Unpacks, labels, stores, inventory items required for the regular operations and maintenance of the power plant. Transports material to the points of use as directed.

- Performs routine and specific housekeeping duties, as assigned by the Watch Engineer, Shift Supervisor or Chief Engineer.

- Perform required water tests on scheduled shift.

- Calibrate and check PH and Conductivity meters as needed.

- Change over equipment (per rotation to standardize operating times).

- Assist Watch Engineer in various testing of boilers and securing boilers for inspection.

- Follow cGMP guidelines.

Duties include:

- Take readings once a shift, every 4 hours per shift, or every hour per shift as required by Power Plant operations on various site wide systems.

- Take readings eight times per shift on boilers (once each hour).

- Blow down gauge glass and water column at the start of each shift.

- Clean area equipment and area each shift and remove any accumulated debris.

- Blow soot as required per schedule.

- Perform required water tests on scheduled shift.

- Calibrate and check PH and Conductivity meters as needed.

- Give each boiler a bottom blowdown Saturday 8-4 shift, log on log sheet.

- Blow soot on boilers, which are on gas on Monday 12 mid to 8 am shift.

- Gather up oily rags in proper waste containers and prepare for pickup.

- Check required operating inventories, and notifies Watch Engineer of low levels.

- Change over equipment (per rotation to standardize operating times).

- Check safety cabinets, safety showers and fire extinguishers as assigned

- Receive fuel oil deliveries

- Warm up and place boiler and generators in service.

- Take boilers and generators off line.

- Assist Watch Engineer in various testing of generators and securing generators for inspection.

- Assist Utility Electrical Engineer in switching and rolling out of site electrical feeders.

- Check and gas up Power Plant truck.

- Monitor Power Plant outside communications, log/receive, and direct telephone calls.

- Change brushes on generators as required.

- Test and log over speed trip on generators when putting in or taking out of service.

- Clean all lab glassware.

- Check aux. Oil pump on generators in service or putting in or taking out of service.

- Check all site wide condensate receivers.

- Check 13, 50H and 80X city water pump houses.

- Check all Sub Stations and take readings as required.

- Operate building 26A water building.

- Follow cGMP guidelines.

- Follow documentation guidelines.

Pay Rate: Begin with the entry rate of $28.24

Shift- Position could be 1st, 2nd or 3rd shift and include weekends.

Note: This is a union - represented position.

Qualifications

Education:

- Required: High School Diploma or Equivalent (GED)

Required:

- New Jersey Blue Seal, (or Red Seal or Gold Seal)
