The Merck Early Discovery Neuroscience team is seeking a talented and motivated scientist with a strong background in Neuroscience to join our Boston-based team to support the identification and validation of novel targets to treat CNS diseases including neurodegenerative disease such as Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease. Candidates should be able to work independently, but will be expected to collaborate proactively and effectively with colleagues across disciplines. Primary responsibilities include design and execution of in vitro experiments including cell culture and development of immunoassays. Ideal candidate will be able to bridge between in vitro and in vivo techniques. The successful candidate will have demonstrated effective teamwork and communication skills. The responsibilities of the Early Discovery Neuroscience team member include:

- Design, execute, perform data analysis and report in-vitro and in vivo neuroscience study results.
- Assist in developing new assays, models, protocols and methods.
- Both oral and written communication of data in a clear and concise manner to the appropriate teams and stakeholders.
- Monitor and review published work to guide internal research.
- Collaborate with members from other functional areas, including medicinal chemistry, in vivo and in vitro pharmacology and translational sciences.

Qualifications

Education:

- BS/BA degree with a minimum 3 years of industry or academia experience, preferably in neuroscience or a related subject area or a Master’s Degree in Biological Sciences

Required:

- Experience in neuroscience research.
- Experience with biochemical methods such as tissue and cellular protein/RNA preps, quantitative PCR, western blots, ELISA, enzyme assays and/or similar molecular biology methods.
- Experience with primary neuronal and/or glia cell culture, and/or standard laboratory cell culture procedures, including techniques such as DNA transfection, viral delivery and immunocytochemistry.
- General knowledge of methods in molecular neuroscience, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.
- Strong data analysis skills including a practical knowledge of statistics.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, including preparation of study reports, presentations and able to contribute manuscripts for publication in peer reviewed journals.

Preferred:

- Experience in pharmaceutical research; Parkinson’s disease experience preferred
- Experience with transgenic rodent models of neurodegenerative disease and their use in preclinical research, including immunohistochemistry.
- Experience with in vivo techniques including small animal handling and rodent stereotaxic surgery.
- Experience with multiple therapeutic modalities (small molecule, antibody, peptide).
