Job Details
We are delighted to annouce that applications are open for a PhD studentship commencing on 1 October 2017. This opportunity arises from University of Sheffield funding dedicated to developing its research resources, in this case the Sheffield Archives.
Deadline: 12pm, Friday 17 March 2017
Interviews: interviews will take place week commending 27 March 2017
Supervisory team: Dr Charles West and Dr Eliza Hartrich
Project description
The archives in Sheffield hold a remarkable and well-preserved run of documents relating to the South Yorkshire manor of Tinsley, starting in the late thirteenth century and continuing through into the sixteenth century. The student on this three-year PhD project will focus on these neglected records to intervene in a number of current historiographical debates in late medieval English history, and will also work with local partners to introduce their research to the residents of modern-day Tinsley.
Project aims:
1) To shed light on life in medieval Tinsley and South Yorkshire more generally, with particular attention to migration and to gender roles in a rural context;
2) To prepare publicly accessible translations and databases of the Latin documents;
3) To bring the archival material to bear on current debates in late medieval English historiography. The successful applicant will have the freedom to determine the exact focus of the project, but potential topics to be addressed include the survival and functioning of seigneurial and village institutions after the Black Death, popular agency in medieval village life, migration patterns, officeholding and gender roles, and the role of border regions along the ‘North-South’ divide;
4) To collaborate with key partners including Sheffield City Archives and ‘Tinsley Time and Travel’, a Heritage Lottery funded-project run by Heeley City Farm, to explore the relevance of these documents in contemporary Tinsley.
