Engagement Fellow

Project title: ‘Living with Dying: Everyday Cultures of Dying within Family Life in Britain, c.1900s-1950s’

Do you have excellent archival skills and experience of archival research analysis? Are you looking to build your experience of engaging with non-academic partners and audiences? Do you possess knowledge in a relevant subject area, such as health, family, everyday life, family history?

This project, funded by an AHRC Leadership Fellowship, led by Dr Laura King (University of Leeds), examines how death and dying were understood, discussed and experienced within everyday life. The research will focus on individual testimony, as well as researching public discussions of dying, such as in the press, and how medical practitioners cared for dying patients. The research explores how attitudes to and experiences of dying and death could vary for different groups of people. At the heart of this research is engagement with partners and audiences beyond academia, and this position of Engagement Fellow will involve working with external partners to engage audiences with the research and maximise the impact of that research.

Based in Leeds, you will work closely with Dr Laura King, external partner organisations and two student interns to develop events, resources and activities, taking the lead on engagement activity for this project. Such activity will be diverse and wide-ranging, from researching the collections of local museums and developing partnerships with family historians to organizing collaborative events with an artist and producing a website. This is an excellent opportunity for an early career scholar to gain skills and experience of engagement work and the post will involve a high level of mentoring and support to ensure strong professional development through this role.

The post has funding for 50% of full time for an 18 month tenure but, in order to be as flexible as possible, there is room for negotiation as to the length and proportional full time equivalent (FTE) of this post. In addition, hourly paid teaching at the same University of Leeds grade will be available. A maximum of 18.75 total hours per week are available (total hours include contact time, preparation and marking).
