Salary:  £29,301 to £36,001 Per annum

We are looking for a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to work on collaborative European projects on crowdsourcing.

About the role

Candidates should have demonstrable experience (via publications in A and A* conferences and journals, participation in research projects, organisation of workshops, and similar) in Web and data science, with a particular focus on crowdsourcing. The position is for one year.

The role will involve research in social computing: online communities, crowdsourcing, human computation, social machines and citizen science.

The ideal candidate will enjoy working in an interdisciplinary, international and dynamic research environment, and should bring their own ideas to advance the state of the art in the field. They should be highly motivated, interested in collaboration, creative and ambitious. They will be expected to contribute to relevant projects, collaborate with researchers from other institutions, publish in renowned scientific venues and help secure follow-up funding.

Relevant projects include:

  • QROWD - Crowdsourcing and active learning to build smart transportation services. Topics include: participatory sensing, machine learning, crowdsourcing.
  • Stars4All - Online platform to increase public awareness around light pollution. Topics include: online communities, human computation, gamification design, machine learning, data visualisation.

The candidate should have a PhD* in Computer Science or a related field and possess outstanding skills and experience in the area of crowdsourcing.  As a fundamental requirement, candidates must be able to communicate and write in fluent English and be willing to contribute to collaborative projects. This includes both joint work with other institutions and meetings with the project team (quarterly or similar) in locations across Europe.

*Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification.  The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD.  Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.

About the research environment

The post will be held in the Electronics and Computer Science (ECS) at the University of Southampton.
