Job Details

The Historical Papers research archive, situated in the William Cullen Library, was established in 1966. We are a friendly, vastly used, valued and popular service as well as unique and accessible hub for human rights research serving civil society, scholars and researchers. 
Historical Papers is one of the largest and most comprehensive independent archives in Southern Africa.

As a research-intensive university, the University is in the process of re-conceptualizing libraries to suit our needs in the 21st century. We are seeking to appoint a suitably qualified, experienced and innovative person for the position of Principal Curator: Archives & Digital Library to ensure that Digital Library and Archives initiatives support the research, teaching, learning, scholarly communication, and preservation needs of the University community.

Available: As soon as possible

Qualifications:

  • A Bachelors degree in the Humanities, with a South African history specialisation
  • Post-graduate professional archival degree or diploma
  • Five years in a capacity requiring both supervisory and professional archival and digitisation project management  in an academic library setting
  • The person in this post reports to the University Librarian.


Required Skills:

  • Manage and develop archival collections and services 
  • Develop and manage the Wits Digitisation Centre
  • Create and deliver digital content aligned to the Library Collection Development and Management Policy
  • Ensure adherence to established, internationally accepted preservation, digitization and interoperability standards
  • Integrate digital  collections with other library resources for widened access
  • Integrate library digital collections into the e-learning environment
  • Advocate digital library initiatives and anticipate future digitisation trends
  • Staff management and their professional development
  • Managing outreach, promotion and public relations relating to Library Digital and Archival Resources
  • Conceptualise and identify digital library and archives projects
