FACULTY OF VETERINARY SCIENCE

DEPARTMENT OF COMPANION ANIMAL CLINICAL STUDIES

SENIOR LECTURER / ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR / PROFESSOR: SMALL ANIMAL SURGERY (ONE POST)

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The successful candidate will actively participate in the following areas:

  • Didactic and clinical/experiential training of undergraduate and postgraduate veterinary and veterinary nursing students in the Small Animal Surgery Section;
  • Departmental research and publications;
  • Departmental and faculty administrative activities and other duties as delegated by the Head of Department;
  • Clinical service in the Onderstepoort Veterinary Academic Hospital and surrounding community;
  • Community engagement activities.

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Senior Lecturer:

  • A BVSc / BVMCh degree or equivalent professional veterinary qualification;
  • A MMedVet or European / American / Australian Board Certified Specialist in Veterinary Small Animal Surgery;
  • Registration as a specialist surgeon with the SAVC, or eligibility for registration within one year of appointment;
  • Four years’ general small animal surgery experience;
  • At least two peer reviewed publications as first or senior author;
  • Commitment to further academic development.


Associate Professor: (same as for Senior Lecturer, plus)

  • A PhD in Small Animal Surgery in addition to a specialist Small Animal Surgery qualification;
  • Six years’ post-specialisation experience, knowledge of and practical skills in small animal surgery;
  • A significant portfolio of research outputs and evidence of participation in research and discipline forums;
  • Postgraduate supervision up to doctorate level;
  • Teaching experience at undergraduate and postgraduate levels;
  • Good presentation skills.


Professor: (same as for Associate Professor, plus)

  • Eight years’ post-specialisation experience, knowledge of and practical skills in small    animal surgery;
  • International standing as researcher;
  • Expert knowledge of Small Animal Surgery;
  • Supervision of postgraduate students and postgraduate student management;
  • Experience working in collaborative research teams;
  • A significant portfolio of research outputs and evidence of participation in international research and discipline forums;
  • A significant track record of original research, including primary and co-authorships of scientific papers, technical reports and policy documents;
  • Previous successful grant applications;
  • Scientific peer reviews;
  • Research student supervision experience.

 

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

  • Appropriate language and communication skills;
  • Good interpersonal skills;
  • Good computer skills (Windows, MS Office, internet);
  • Out of hours availability.

 

ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:

  • Teaching experience appropriate to the tertiary environment;
  • Commitment to further academic development.

 

The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent’s level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED medical aid scheme and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
