Established in 1980, Aga Khan University School of Nursing and Midwifery (AKU-SONAM) was the first academic unit of the University to be established. AKUSONAM motivates young men and women from all over Pakistan and the developing countries to choose nursing as a career in order to strengthen the delivery of health care services.

Responsibilities

You will be responsible for:

  • designing, delivering and developing credit bearing courses in English for Academic Purposes for  undergraduate and graduate students at the  SONAM
  • developing and conducting assessments as required for credit bearing and other assessed courses; and monitoring and providing feedbacks on progress made by students in improving their English language skills 
  • providing on-going English language support to undergraduate and graduate students through writing clinics, editorial support and guidance on assignments, and conversation sessions 
  • providing special consultations and remedial classes for the students who are in need
  • conducting enrichment programmes, as per needs
  • providing support to graduate students in thesis writing via inpidual tutorials
  • making effective use of Moodle and other online technologies to deliver online courses and support face-to-face courses  
  • providing assistance in developing online and paper-based self-access materials to support student learning outside the classroom 
  • participating in AKU-SONAM activities such as faculty meetings on  needs basis 
  • being engaged in relevant professional development activities. 


Requirements

You should have:

  • Master’s degree in English Language or Applied Linguistics from an HEC recognized or foreign university/institution along with a qualification in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) or equivalent 
  • high level of competence in English language (equivalent to C1 and above in the Common European Framework of Reference)
  • excellent communication skills in English for academic purposes (academic writing, presentations, discussions etc.)
  • high level of knowledge and understanding of English language systems (morphology, phonology, syntax etc.)
  • up to date  knowledge of TESOL methodologies and practice, especially for  adult learning in academic contexts
  • high level of competence as a TEFL classroom practitioner
  • ability to create a positive learning atmosphere and develop good rapport with students
  • ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • proficiency in MS Office and other related IT applications.
