Job Purpose
We are seeking to appoint an autonomous and talented mixed-methods researcher to undertake research as part of a Cancer Research UK funded [grant number C50276/A21555] study exploring parents' perceptions and experiences of using e-cigarettes in homes with young children. This mixed-methods study involves three interlinked phases of research including: (i) a rapid evidence review, (ii) a quantitative survey to determine parents' use of and values, attitudes and beliefs around e-cigarettes and tobacco cigarettes and their use in homes with children, and (iii) qualitative interviews with parents to explore home e-cigarette and tobacco cigarette use and their views on the use of e-cigarettes as a component in future interventions to support parents to make their homes tobacco smoke-free.
The post-holder will be based in the Institute of Applied Health Research at the University of Birmingham. The post offers an exciting opportunity to work within the mixed-methods tobacco control community at the University of Birmingham. It is anticipated that the successful candidate will have relevant experience of conducting mixed-methods research within community settings.
Person Specification
- First degree in area of specialism and normally, a higher degree relevant to research area or equivalent qualifications
- Evidence of successful and timely completion of mixed-methods research
- Self-motivated, pro-active, and able to use initiative where appropriate
- Knowledge and understanding of key tobacco control research and issues
- Ability to communicate complex information clearly both orally and in written form
- Good knowledge of ethical and research governance in health related research
- Experience of participant recruitment and taking informed consent
- Experience of undertaking evidence reviews
- Experience of using qualitative data collection methods (e.g. interviews / focus groups)
- Understanding of and ability to develop questionnaires
- Experience of using quantitative data collection methods (e.g. questionnaires)
- Evidence of peer-reviewed publication from previous mixed-methods research
- Computer literate; experience of qualitative (e.g. NVivo) and statistical analysis (e.g. SPSS/STATA) software
- Experience of working in multi-disciplinary research teams
- High level analytical capability
- Understanding of and ability to contribute to broader management/administration processes
- Ability to assess resource requirements and use resources effectively
