FIRST VETERINARY TECHNOLOGIST (ONE-YEAR CONTRACT APPOINTMENT)

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The successful candidate will be responsible for the implementation of tests for rendering of a diagnostic service in the diagnostic laboratories of the Department of Veterinary Tropical Diseases. This will include:

  • Operating and maintaining equipment used in qualitative and quantitative analysis;
  • The writing of new SOP’s according to set methods/criteria;
  • Assisting with the verification and validation of new diagnostic tests and also performing of new tests;
  • Training technologists in the various laboratories to perform newly implemented tests to set standards;
  • Directing communication with the laboratory manager, researchers and laboratory personnel regarding implementation of new tests;
  • Participating in proficiency and inter-laboratory testing; 
  • Performing detection, isolation and identification test methods as back-up when the need arises;
  • The typing of results of diagnostic tests;
  • Performing the sample registration process and ensuring that samples are received and registered in accordance with the prescribed procedure;
  • Ensuring that media and reagents are prepared accurately and positive/negative controls are applied (where appropriate);
  • Assisting with the  presentation of  veterinary student practical sessions;
  • Assisting with the training of postgraduate students.

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • B-Tech degree in Veterinary Technology;
  • Registered with the South African Veterinary Council as a Veterinary Technologist;
  • At least six years’ experience in a diagnostic laboratory including at least one year experience in each of the following laboratories:
    • Virology;
    • Serology;
    • Bacteriology;
    • Molecular Biology.

 

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

  • Computer literacy in MS Office as well as database and laboratory information software;
  • Appropriate language and communication skills;
  • Good interpersonal skills and the ability to interact effectively with a wide range of entities within the University community as well as external entities.

 

ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:

  • SANAS: Professional Short Course in Laboratory Systems (ISO 17025) and Internal Auditing (For All Standards) (5 days);
  • Three years’ experience in conducting laboratory audits;
  • Three years’ experience in development and validation of diagnostic test methods.  

 

The all-inclusive remuneration package for this contract position will be commensurate with the incumbent’s level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines.
