Job Purpose

To create and contribute to the creation of knowledge by undertaking specified research activities within an established research programme and/or specific research project.

The successful applicant will join a laboratory of Dr Pawel Grzechnik which is focused on fundamental processes governing transcription, processing and degradation of coding and non-coding RNA in eukaryotic cells. The post holder will investigate roles for transcriptional factors interacting with RNA Polymerase II in mRNA 3’ end formation in mammalian cells. The project aims to identify new pathways controlling cell proliferation.

This full-time fixed-term post is funded by the Wellcome Trust for up to 24 months in the first instance.

The successful applicant should have (or be expected to obtain within next 6 months) a PhD in molecular biology, biochemistry, or a relevant field, be familiar with molecular biology techniques and have experience in working with mammalian tissue cultures. An experimental experience in RNA biology and/or bioinformatics is desirable but not essential. The post holder will contribute to specific projects using a variety of laboratory techniques including gene-specific and genome-wide analysis, genome editing, and protein techniques.

Person Specification

Essential:

  • • PhD degree (or due to complete doctoral studies within next 6 months) in the field of biochemistry, molecular biology or other relevant discipline
  • • Experience with mammalian tissue cultures
  • • Understanding of transcriptional processes and RNA processing pathways
  • • High level analytical capability
  • • Ability to communicate complex information clearly
  • • Fluency in relevant models, techniques or methods and ability to contribute to developing new ones
  • • Ability to assess resource requirements and use resources effectively
  • • Understanding of and ability to contribute to broader management/administration processes

Desirable:

  • • Experience in RNA techniques and methods
  • • Experience with Next Generation Sequencing and basic data analysis
