Job Details

The University of Bristol is seeking to appoint a fixed-term full-time Teaching Associate in German from 1 September 2017 to 30 June 2019. This is replacement cover for Dr Steffan Davies who has been awarded a Leverhulme Trust Major Research Fellowship for this period.

The Department of German is an integral part of a dynamic and forward-looking School of Modern Languages in the Faculty of Arts. The Department is one of only a handful in the UK able to offer an extensive range of modules (‘units’) at undergraduate level encompassing German and Austrian literature, film, culture, thought, history and politics. In addition to this, German language is studied by highly qualified and strongly motivated undergraduates either as a mandatory part of a Single Honours degree, a Joint Honours degree with another one or two modern languages, or a Joint Honours degree with another subject.

An ability to design new units and contribute to existing units in German literature since c. 1750, cultural studies, politics, history and/or film is essential, as is the ability to teach German language at a range of levels, undergraduate and postgraduate. The successful candidate will also support the the Department and School in the development of innovative teaching methods and materials and the dissemination of good teaching practice, and will make an administrative contribution to the life of the School (as an acadmic tutor, for example).

The successful candidate will have native or near-native competence in German and in English, and is likely to have, or be about to obtain, a relevant postgraduate qualification (PhD) and to have experience of teaching, ideally in the HE sector.

Informal enquiries should be directed to Subject Lead, Professor Robert Vilain at robert.vilain@bristol.ac.uk.

Interviews will be held in the week commencing 8th May 2017.
