Job Purpose

The Chair will be expected to:

  • Produce world-leading research;
  • Play a leadership role in developing collaborative applications for research funding;
  • Lead on impact activities;
  • Build on existing achievements and further enhance the cross-disciplinary reach of corpus linguistics within the Department of English Language and Applied Linguistics, the Centre for Corpus Research, and the university more widely working with current staff to forge a recognisable Birmingham identity;
  • Increase postgraduate recruitment at both PGT and doctoral level;
  • Contribute to teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level, playing a major role in the development of new initiatives in programme development.


Person specification:

The successful candidate will have an outstanding record of publication at an international level and a record of successful applications for research funding. He/she will also have a commitment to teaching, experience of programme development, and a good track record of attracting and supervising doctoral researchers. He/she will have research expertise in corpus linguistics as well as wide-ranging research interests in English Language and Applied Linguistics. He/she will have a vision for developing their specific area of research while reinforcing the strong Birmingham ‘brand’, and will demonstrate the ability to lead colleagues in the department.

Person Specification

We would expect the candidate to:

  • Have an outstanding research record of international stature;
  • Hold research funding and demonstrate an established record in attracting external funding;
  • Have the vision, leadership, experience and enthusiasm to build on current strengths in maintaining and developing a leading research presence;
  • Demonstrate an ability to further the academic planning and strategic development of English Language and Applied Linguistics in the University and, where appropriate, to facilitate its development within the UK;
  • Demonstrate an ability to manage and interact with staff and students at all levels, and to contribute to broadening the strategic development of the Department;
  • Show awareness of the importance of, and willingness to play a part in the teaching of undergraduate and graduate students, and the mentorship of post-doctoral research visitors.


Qualifications

  • A good first degree together with relevant higher degree
  • An international standing in the research field, evidenced by contributions to peer review, journal editorship etc
  • Demonstrated effective teaching and learning methodologies


Research

  • Demonstrate major research experience
  • Demonstrate an extensive list of publications with publishers with an international reputation
  • Evidence of income generation
  • Evidence of leadership in research and the potential to drive forward a research strategy


Management

  • Demonstrate the ability to lead and support a team of teachers and researchers
  • Be able to identify new areas of research and teaching
  • Demonstrate networking skills across the university
  • Demonstrate resource planning and management
  • Be able to implement the mission of the School, College and University
  • Be able to solve problems creatively and effectively
  • Demonstrate knowledge of quality assurance mechanisms
