The School of Biological Sciences is one of the largest Schools of this type in Australia. The School provides unique opportunities for study or research in plant and animal biology with research programs spanning ecology, molecular plant sciences, marine biology, entomology, and genetics & evolution.

The role

The Postdoctoral Fellow will carry out research associated with the Australian Research Council Discovery Grant, "A new molecular/morphological view of animal evolution based on marsupials". The primary purpose of this work is to work with Dr. Vera Weisbecker (primary supervisor) and A/Prof Matthew Phillips (Queensland University of Technology) on developing novel methods for integrating molecular and morphological data, to answer major questions in marsupial evolution and uncover mechanisms that underpin biodiversity variation in animals. The position will be will also support the group's broader research interests in vertebrate evolution and provides opportunities to travel to museum collections and collaborate internationally.

The person

Applicants should possess qualifications in either evolution, genetics, bioinformatics or an equivalent combination of qualifications and experience in a similar field. They should demonstrate a proven research track record in computational phylogenetics and/or inference of morphological evolution (particularly in the field of 3D geometric morphometrics) in an animal clade, with demonstrated experience with computation in either R or BEAST/MrBayes. Well-developed interpersonal skills with a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively as part of a team, are important, as is the proven ability to work effectively with minimal supervision to initiate, execute and report research within prescribed timelines. Applicants should also have well-developed written and oral communication skills and with a demonstrated track record in publishing in high quality journals and presenting at conferences. Other desirable attributes include experience with 3D geometric morphometrics, and work in museums.

This role is a full-time position; however flexible working arrangements (including a part-time option) can be negotiated.

Remuneration

This is a full time, fixed term appointment at Academic level A, with an expected appointment start date of June 2017, for 20 months. The remuneration package will be in the range AU$81,545 - AU$87,535 p.a. plus employer superannuation contributions of up to 17% (total package will be in the range AU$95,407 - AU$102,416 p.a.).
