DEPARTMENT OF COMPUTER SCIENCE

POST TITLE: SYSTEMS AND DEVELOPMENT OFFICER

PEROMNES POST LEVEL: 9

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The successful candidate will be required to render a comprehensive service with regard to the management and maintenance of the general and data storage servers of the Department of Computer Science.

These servers include:

  • Departmental mail server;
  • Multimedia servers;
  • Cloud system;
  • Postgrad server;
  • Computer Science portal server;
  • Netcentric computer systems server;
  • Multi-blade computing cluster;

and

  • To provide support  for future big data and data science infrastructure that will be acquired;
  • To provide custom development of new websites or services that will facilitate the improvement of teaching and/or research outcomes;
  • To provide staff support with reference to the computing infrastructure used for teaching and research activities in the department;
  • To provide student support with reference to the Linux operating system, and user account maintenance;
  • To supervise a technical team of students.

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, and enrolled for a higher degree in Computer Science.

 

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

  • Five years Linux/Unix System Administration;
  • Five years LDAP database development /administration;
  • Four years SQL database development /administration;
  • Four years C++ Development;
  • Four years of HTML and CSS browser dependant knowledge;
  • Three years Ruby development;
  • Three years PHP development;
  • Three years Python development;
  • Three years Django development;
  • Three years MongoDB development /administration;
  • Two years  Blade Server administration;
  • In depth experience with Debian and Arch Linux;

 

RECOMMENDATIONS:

  • Experience with Apache, Nginx and uwsgi;
  • Experience with Exim, Spamassasin and Courier;
  • Experience with server hardware maintenance;
  • Knowledgeable in Microsoft Windows and Apple OS X for end-user support;
  • Integration between LDAP and PAM.

 

The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent’s level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED medical aid scheme and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
