Job Details

The University of Bristol’s School of Physics seeks an outstanding candidate for a permanent lectureship in Theoretical Physics, tenable from 1st September 2017 or a date to be agreed. A lectureship is similar to an assistant professorship in Northern America.

We seek an outstanding researcher and teacher in theoretical physics, ideally with a specialism in wave physics, optics or photonics. Such research may include structured light and singular optics, fundamental forces from electromagnetic field theory, geometric (Berry) phases, transformation optics, and topological solitons. Of further interest are tailored light-matter interactions with materials & metamaterials where analogies in electron beams, acoustics and condensed matter systems (such as topological phases of matter and Majorana states) can be explored. Mechanical effects and coupling of spin/polarization and orbital degrees of freedom associated with electromagnetic fields are also areas where the uniquely broad research interests of Bristol theorists provide an ideal research environment. We further envisage the study of analogies between optical and photonic systems with areas of condensed matter, quantum information and particle physics to be at the core of future research strategy.

The lecturer will be expected to develop an internationally leading independent research programme as well as to undertake teaching and administrative duties as appropriate.  The post will be held in the Theoretical Physics group, which has an outstanding record of excellence in research in theoretical physics. See http://www.bristol.ac.uk/physics/research/theory/ for more information on staff and their research interests.

The appointment will be within Pathway 1, Lecturer profile b (£36,001-£40,523) or exceptionally profile c (£41,709 - £46,925) according to qualifications and experience, and is open-ended, subject to the University's standard probation, progression and promotion procedures.

For informal enquires please contact Head of Group, Professor Mark Dennis (Mark.Dennis@bristol.ac.uk).

The University is committed to creating and sustaining a fully inclusive culture.  We welcome applicants from all backgrounds and communities.
