Job Purpose

A fixed term appointment until 30/11/2017, this post aims to create and contribute to the creation of knowledge through a specified range of activities within a multidisciplinary research and developmental programme. The Research Fellow will work on bespoke projects within the Jubilee Centre for Character and Virtues to explore character and virtues education in the UK school system through curriculum development and action-research initiatives.

Specifically, the post holder will play an important role in developing interventions and leading on the practical application of the Jubilee Centre’s research in schools in the UK, specifically in primary schools. The post-holder will be expected to be proactive in completing research duties, and to prioritise their own work schedule to accommodate the overall priorities of individuals, project teams and the Centre as a whole. It is expected that the post holder will use their own initiative and judgement to solve problems as they arise, but should report to the Jubilee Centre Director of Education and Director for advice and guidance when necessary.

This post would suit an experienced primary teacher who is keen to develop a career as a researcher in a practice-orientated environment.

Person Specification

  • • First degree in area of specialism and to have completed, or be working towards, a Masters level qualification in the area of education (preferably Character Education);
  • • Primary school teacher with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), with substantial teaching experience in the UK;
  • • Knowledge and understanding of the UK schools system, preferably gained through teaching or working in the sector;
  • • Demonstrates a commitment to the principles of character education;
  • • Working experience of character education and the practical application of research;
  • • Experience of developing character education interventions at primary level will be an advantage;
  • • High level analytical capability;
  • • Ability to communicate complex information clearly;
  • • Fluency in relevant models, techniques or methods and ability to contribute to developing new ones; experience in quantitative and qualitative research methods will be an advantage;
  • • Ability to assess resource requirements and use resources effectively;
  • • Understanding of and ability to contribute to broader management/administration processes.
