Job Details
The Royal Society-funded project Monitoring Ethiopia's Dynamic Crust with Satellite Geodesy aims to create a new map of present-day surface motions, significantly improving understanding of the distribution of geohazards and providing information that can support resilient growth and development in one of the world’s least developed countries. In this role, you will be working as part of an expert team to produce a fundamental new data set of direct relevance to monitoring and managing geohazards in Ethiopia.
You will work with colleagues to analyse the results, combining them with satellite data to produce a 3D motion map of ground deformation. You will be responsible for leading two separate three week field campaigns in Ethiopia, making new measurements of surface velocities at selected benchmark sites. You will also contribute to the development of research publications and participate in the planning and management of an end-of-project workshop to share results with current and potential future collaborators.
You will have, or be close to obtaining a PhD in geophysics or satellite geodesy or a closely allied discipline, focusing on East Africa/Ethiopia plus experience of Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) and/or Global Positioning Systems (GPS), and fluency in Amharic.
