School of Social Science

With over 45 academic staff and 900 equivalent full-time students including 100 higher degree students, the School is one of the most prestigious of its type in Australia.  It is a research-intensive School comprising the disciplines of anthropology, archaeology, criminology and sociology. At the undergraduate level, the School manages the Bachelor of Social Science and the Bachelor of Criminology and Criminal Justice (Honours), and also offers majors in each discipline within the Bachelor of Arts, along with an archaeological science major in the Bachelor of Science. The School manages postgraduate coursework programs in Development Practice, Community Development, Museum Studies, and Heritage Management.

The School's commercial arm, UQ Culture & Heritage Unit (UQCHU), undertakes a significant number of large-scale applied research and consultancy projects each year.   The Unit currently works in collaboration with UniQuest or with the HASS Faculty Research Office in managing many of the projects, a number of which are contract research and therefore set up through UQ's Research and Innovation division as research projects.

The role

The Senior Lecturer/Associate Professor in Archaeology or Anthropology will engage in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, postgraduate supervision, further development of the archaeology or anthropology program, and the heritage management and museum studies programs, and undertake research and publication.

The position will include the role of Director, UQCHU, initially for a period of up to four years.  The teaching responsibilities during the period of the UQCHU Directorship will be at the lower end of a standard Teaching and Research (T&R) appointment. The Director role has been modified to be an academic, T&R appointment following a review of the Unit in 2016.

The Director manages UQCHU's operations in consulting, contract research, and public engagement. A major aspect of the position is maintaining and expanding relationships with community, government and industry, including Indigenous communities. The Director will also collaborate with the School's archaeology and anthropology disciplines and other cognate staff, to expand consulting and contract research.  The Director is responsible for developing the strategic direction of the Unit, bringing in new clients and growing the business.

The person

Applicants must have a PhD in archaeology or anthropology, and possess expert knowledge of issues related to Indigenous communities as stakeholders in cultural heritage and native title projects, along with expert knowledge of the statutory environment and non-statutory bodies involved in assembling and presenting expert evidence and opinion in the native title legal process and/or expert knowledge of the heritage profession.  Experience in managing a diversified applied anthropology or cultural heritage consulting practice, with a demonstrated ability to expand business by winning consultancies, tenders and contracts, is essential.  The successful candidate will have demonstrated capacity for innovative teaching and course design, and experience in teaching courses in Australian archaeology or applied anthropology.  They will demonstrate high quality contribution to research with a track record of peer reviewed publications, research reports and high impact engagement.

Remuneration

This is a full-time, continuing appointment at Academic Level C or D (Teaching & Research).  The base annual salary for Level C is:  $112,874 to $130,150; and for Level D is:  $135,909 to $149,731.  In addition, the employee will receive employer superannuation contributions of up to 17%.
