Job Purpose

Birmingham Law School wishes to appoint three Professors of Law to contribute to and help to lead our diverse and stimulating intellectual community.

Birmingham Law School is committed to the pursuit of excellence in research and teaching, and to supporting academic work that is influential in and beyond the academy. Our scholarly community includes academics pursuing doctrinal, comparative, critical, socio-legal, interdisciplinary and empirical work and all methodological approaches are welcomed and supported. Our current research centres include the flagship Centre for Professional Legal Education and Research, through which we also provide extensive ‘law in action’ opportunities to our students including Pro Bono and clinic work. We are proud of the diversity and excellence of our student body, and committed to enabling students to develop into independent researchers and thinkers throughout their time with us.

As a member of Birmingham Law School, the successful applicants will join a lively and flourishing School where they will provide intellectual and other leadership, deliver challenging and rewarding teaching, and produce world-leading research in our collegiate and highly ambitious scholarly community.

Person Specification

We would expect the successful candidates to
- Have an outstanding research record of international stature;
- Hold research funding and demonstrate an established record in attracting external funding;
- Have the vision, leadership, experience and enthusiasm to build on current strengths in maintaining and developing a leading research presence;
- Demonstrate an ability to further the academic planning and strategic development of Law in the University and, where appropriate, to facilitate its development within the UK;
- Demonstrate an ability to manage and interact with staff and students at all levels, and to contribute to broadening the strategic development of the School;
- Show awareness of the importance of, and willingness to play a part in the teaching of undergraduate and graduate students, and the mentorship of post-doctoral research visitors.
