    The Faculty of Sciences is one of five faculties at the University of Adelaide. As the first university in Australia to grant degrees in science (1882), science has long been at the cornerstone of the institution and this continues today. As a research and education leader in fields such as agriculture, food & wine, animal & veterinary sciences, biological sciences, and physical sciences, the Faculty offers an exciting and innovative work environment.

    The School of Animal and Veterinary Sciences is one of four schools in the Faculty of Sciences, located at the University's Roseworthy campus approximately 50 km north of Adelaide on a 1600 hectare property, less than eight kilometres from the township of Gawler. The campus includes a working farm, animal holding facilities, yards, sheds and a range of general purpose and specialist teaching and research spaces and laboratories. It is South Australia's only veterinary school and constitutes a team of leading animal and veterinary science academics. The school has a Veterinary Health Centre with four units that offer a range of first opinion, ambulatory and specialist veterinary care across all animal species to the general public and referring veterinarians and are used in its veterinary program.

    The Data Decisions Systems program is led by Professor Wayne Pitchford. The successful applicant will work, as part of a team, with meat processing companies in the Data Decision Systems Program of the Advanced Livestock Measurement Technologies grant funded by the Federal Department of Agriculture and Water Resources through the Rural Research and Development for Profit program.  The grant is administered by Meat and Livestock Australia and Murdoch University is the lead organisation. The person will conduct and lead analysis of data from meat processors to examine opportunities to increase efficiency in the boning room and add value to their business.

    The position will involve guided coordination of Program 5 – Data Decision Systems and include analysis of industry and company specific data, undertaking a stocktake of existing and potential tools and developing tools for optimisation. It will also involve the development of a work plan based on program KPIs and outputs and facilitating the training of Supply Chain Officers.

    Salary: Level B ($94,135 to $111,788) per annum

    Superannuation: An employer contribution of 9.5% applies / 17% may apply

    Term of position: This fixed-term contract is available immediately for three years

    Position requirements

    To be successful you should have:

    • Degree in Agriculture or Animal Science, Statistics, Engineering or Econometrics with a minimum three years relevant experience
    • Demonstrated ability to work effectively, both independently and collaboratively, as part of a team
    • Demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal) including a proven ability to liaise with both academic and industry audiences
    • Demonstrated experience in statistical analysis
    • Demonstrated problem solving ability and ability to seek innovative solutions
    • Capacity to undertake, under supervision, research works and professional activities
    • Interest in animal production and the red meat industry
