Job Purpose

To provide advice on research methods to health care professionals and researchers and assist in the development of research funding proposals to national peer-reviewed funding programmes in response to requests through the Research Design Service West Midlands (RDSWM) with Jonathan Mathers (RDS WM, Director Birmingham Hub).

The post-holder will also conduct qualitative and mixed methods research, predominantly in relation to trial feasibility and outcome related research, in the Institute of Applied Health Research alongside Jonathan Mathers. The post-holder will create and contribute to the creation of knowledge by undertaking a specified range of activities within the applied qualitative and mixed methods work of the Social Studies in Medicine research group.

Person Specification

  • • First degree in area of specialism and normally, a higher degree relevant to research area or equivalent qualifications
  • • High level analytical capability
  • • Fluency in relevant models, techniques or methods and ability to contribute to developing new ones
  • • Skills and experience in the collection of in-depth qualitative data (e.g. via interviews, focus groups, observation)
  • • Proficiency in qualitative analysis and interpretation
  • • Fluency in presentation skills, including use of presentation software (eg, Powerpoint)
  • • Ability to communicate complex information clearly
  • • Ability to work effectively with a range of health care professionals and researchers
  • • Ability to assimilate knowledge relevant to the range of National Institute for Health Research Funding programmes and other National peer-reviewed funding schemes and apply this as part of advising RDS service users
  • • Evidence of publishing academic publications
  • • Ability to assess resource requirements and use resources effectively
  • • Understanding of and ability to contribute to broader management/administration processes
