Job Purpose

  • • To create and contribute to the creation of knowledge by undertaking a specified range of activities within an established research programme and/or specific research project.
  • • Performance of the full range of routine and specialised lung function tests, with particular emphasis on performing and interpreting tests related to sleep disorders and sleep disordered breathing.
  • • Initiating, monitoring, and organising treatment for patients with sleep disordered breathing
  • • Responsible for the monitoring and performance of calibration and quality control procedures for all equipment.
  • • Supervision of less experienced staff
  • • Teaching and training of Trust and University staff
  • • Updates own professional knowledge
  • • Participation in research and development activities in Respiratory and Metabolic Medicine


Person Specification

  • • First degree in area of specialism and normally, a higher degree relevant to research area or equivalent qualifications
  • • High level analytical capability
  • • Ability to communicate complex information clearly
  • • Fluency in relevant models, techniques or methods in the field of sleep related disorders
  • • Ability to assess resource requirements and use resources effectively
  • • Understanding of and ability to contribute to broader management/administration processes

 

  • Responsible for ensuring that calibration and quality assurance procedures are adhered to by all staff members.
  • Collection and recording of calibration and quality control data to ensure that equipment is functioning to agreed standards and specifications and is documented for technical audit.
  • Perform the full range of tests on patients to obtain good quality diagnostic information including:

•- full lung function testing, sleep investigations, lung mechanics, and in the department and on wards and other locations as needed.

  • Produce accurate and comprehensive technical reports on the range of tests performed.
  • Responsible for ensuring that all work produced is according to appropriate national, international and departmental guidelines and the research protocols.
  • Support and provide technical assistance for junior staff (physiology, nursing, research staff and medical) to develop their technical expertise.
  • Performance of and assistance with the testing of the more difficult patients and procedures that less experienced technologists may not be able to handle, to obtain good quality diagnostic information.
